Sheila E. Mitchell

On November 20 our guest speaker was Sheila E. Mitchell, Chief Probation Officer, Santa Clara County.

Ms. Mitchell was appointed by the County of Santa Clara in 2004 to head the Probation Department of 900 employees. Since her appointment, Ms. Mitchell has focused on developing a high performance work force, improving community relations, improving operations at Juvenile Hall and the Ranches, implementing evidenced-based practices, evaluating the Department₼s continuum of services to rehabilitate youth, and leading discussions about juvenile detention reform and California Youth Authority commitments.

Previously, Ms. Mitchell served as the Assistant Chief Probation Officer with the Alameda County Probation Department. A national and international consultant, Ms. Mitchell has presented papers and given workshops on creative and innovative proven approaches to gender-specific programming, alternatives to detention, and institutional best practices. She has served on the Council of Juvenile Correctional Administrators₼ implementation team and currently serves on numerous criminal justice committees.
