Top Priorities for 2025-26

Every year, League members discuss what issues should be our priorities for action/advocacy, education
and/or study. The process begins with a program planning meeting early in the year, then final approval is given at our Annual Meeting usually held in June. Here are the issues we adopted for 2025-26 to help focus our work.
-
Making Democracy Work
In addition to Voter Service activities, a focus on money in politics. How money is influencing our local government especially campaign/public financing and independent expenditures. A look at ethics in the political arena. Potentially, more civics education.
-
Climate Change
Continue to monitor Climate Smart San Jose and implementation of the City’s Community Urban Forest Program. Continue to encourage sustainability programs and carbon neutrality. Monitor development in Coyote Valley. With other local leagues, follow development of Santa Clara County Urban Forest Master Plan and plan education and possible advocacy around this new program.
-
Immigration
A new focus which includes education and gathering information about how changing immigration practices are impacting individuals in our community, and how these practices affect our workforce and society as whole. Action and advocacy using League positions and principles.
-
Housing and Homelessness
Continue to address these issues locally. Monitor how funds for affordable housing and homelessness are being used and understand obstacles to increasing affordable housing. The Housing and Homelessness Committee plans to hold regularly scheduled meeting featuring guest speakers with technical expertise and tours of interim and permanent affordable projects. Key items to monitor are the annual report on the San Jose Housing Element and the work to update the Community Plan to End Homelessness.
